Can I use rizene for PrEP as it contains the 2 drugs of truvada?
Answer
Thanks for getting in touch.
Rizene is a generic version of an ARV called Atripla, please see here: https://i-base.info/guides/1561
Though Rizene contains the components that are used in PrEP medication, namely FTC and Tenofovir DF, it isn’t used as PrEP, at least not in the UK where i-base are based.
Depending on where you live, you should be able to access PrEP, be this privately or through a clinic.
Hi Bzy, Rizene is not a recommendation to be used as PEP. It can offer protection but it is not used as it contains a medication called efavirenz. Combinations that include this can be associated with challenging side effects such as mood disturbances and nightmares. These side effects can make it difficult to continue taking treatment for the full 28 days. If you are continuing with this, it is best to take Rizene in the evening before bed and avoid high fat meals when you do take it.
A more suitable option is TLD and it is okay to switch to another type of PEP as long as you continue daily with treatment for 28 days. Do you currently have any problems with Rizene or are you managing well with it?
More information about PEP can be found here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/pep-faq
They gave rizene as pep is it fine
Hi Busisiwe, as Rizene contains a drug called Atripla, it is a drug only used to treat HIV. It is not used to prevent HIV as either PEP or PrEP.
Is Rizene used by people who have the virus only???
Hi Porsh, where are you? Rizene does contain some of the same medication as PrEP but is not often given as PrEP. This is because it contains more medication than necessary and some people may experience unnecessary side effects.
PrEP is usually given as 2 medications in one tablet (Rizene has 3). This link explains more about PrEP: https://i-base.info/guides/prep
They gaved me rizene as prep Ian HIV negative am I safe
Hi Ziyanda, Rizene is not licensed to be used as PrEP. PrEP is a combination of 2 drugs and does not contain efavirenz. Rizene is a combination of 3 drugs including efavirenz and is used to manage HIV. Please see this link about PrEP: https://i-base.info/guides/prep
Maybe the doctor gave you Rizene as PEP. This is when one month of 3-drug treatment is used AFTER you have been at risk:
