Q and A

Question

Do I still need a booster COVID vaccine if my CD4 count is good?

I was diagnosed 3 years ago. RITA test showed a recent infection, on ARV’ s straightaway, Biktarvy, and I remain undetectable.

I have had my COVID vaccines with no side effects. I eat well, exercise, don’t smoke and don’t have any other health conditions However I have been offered the Spring booster dose.

The booklet says for those with a weakened immune system and diseases that affect the immune system such as poorly controlled HIV?

Am I missing something?

I thought I now have a good immune system, not a weakened one and my HIV is certainly well controlled. Is is worthwhile just getting the Spring booster?

Answer

Thanks for your email and the details about your history.

The Spring vaccine booster is a good idea for everyone living with HIV. This is even though your immune system will be similar to someone who is HIV negative.

This is because vaccine protection goes down over time, so the booster will help.

It this case, the policy is easier to work but treating all people living with HIV as one group. Please don’t worry or get upset by this.

Great that you were diagnosed so early and started ART straight away. And also that you are doing so well.

So long as you are good at taking your meds, HIV is very unlikely to cause you health problems in the future.

It might also mean that you can join studies looking at cure-related research in the future.
