Question
Both parents are HIV positive. Will baby be safe?
1 March 2023. Related: All topics, Pregnancy.
Both partners are HIV positive and having unprotected sex and pregnant. Can the unborn baby be infected?
Answer
Hi, how are you doing?
Congratulations on the pregnancy.
Are you and/or your partner on treatment? and if so what have you had recent viral load testing?
If you both have undetectable viral loads, risk to baby is very small. Baby will also be given their own medication after being born (for how long depends on risk to baby).
Risk is still small if only mum is on treatment with an undetectable viral load. Risk to baby is more affected by how mums HIV managed rather than dads.
Josh.
Hi Richard, I am sorry for your loss but this is not something we cover. Paternity testing can only be done with consent of all people involved.
My son’s girlfriend died with AIDS. The baby girl is about 17 years old now and doesn’t have HIV.
My son always said that he wasn’t the father. He had hiv as well and now he’s passed away too in an accident.
I’m trying to find out is the child could be his.
