How long does one have before developing AIDS?

What is tha maximum period between infection and AIDS-state?

Answer

This is a question about definition. Currently, it is widely accepted that AIDS is a state when someone has a CD4 count below 200 and has certain opportunistic infections.

Without treatment, different people get to that state for different periods of time. Some-for several years, others for more than 15 years. With the modern antiretroviral treatment, one can supress the virus so well, that to get to AIDS-state only after many years: 30-40.
