Question

Can someone who was diagnosed with a low CD4 count recover fully?

Can someone with a low CD4 count at diagnosis recover to full health?

Answer

Hello and many thanks for getting in touch.

How are you coping with your diagnosis?

People living with HIV who are diagnosed late can have a very low CD4 count.

This is not uncommon.

The way to deal with this is to take your medication (ARVs) on a daily basis and to take any preventative medication the doctors give you.

Usually, the doctors prescribe co-trimoxazole, fluconazole and possibly some other antibiotics to prevent and treat infections until the immune system is robust again and the CD4 count grows above 200 cells/ml.

Please do not worry. We have many evidence and examples of people who have recovered fully, even if they were diagnosed late.
