Question

Can I breastfeed my baby?

Hello, my baby is 2 weeks old.
I am undetectable and I am giving her nevirapine as my doctor advised.
I wanted to know more about mixed feeding: is my baby safe if I combine formula and breast milk?
I think my breastmilk is not enough for my daughter.

Answer

Hello and thanks for getting in touch.

Congratulations on your baby – you must be very happy.

Please don’t worry about HIV. It sounds like you are doing everything right, mostly by making sure you are undetectable.

The guidelines in the UK suggest exclusively breastfeeding or formula, although it is mentioned that both options at the same time are used sometimes.

I am not sure what the guidelines in other countries say as I am based in the UK.

Please follow your doctor’s and midwife’s advice about this.

I am sending you the link to two fact sheets about breastfeeding from the British HIV Association in case you find them useful (they also include information for people who don’t want to breast/chestfeed).
