Q and A

Question

How can I get pregnant when I am HIV positive?

Can you please give me information on the right procedure in getting pregnant when you are HIV positive?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

There are different options as regards getting pregnant when you are HIV positive.

The options take into consideration whether your partner is also HIV positive or whether they are HIV negative.

As you have not indicated this in your email, I am sending you our general guide on HIV, pregnancy and women’s health. The guide includes detailed information on the various options available. Please follow this link to this guide to HIV and pregnancy for more information.

    Hi Lorato,

If you want to start trying for a baby, then go ahead. You’re on meds, so there’s nothing to stop you. If you’d like some info on HIV and pregnancy, please see here:

    Hi Landiwe,

If you’re asking if you being HIV positive is causing you fertility problems, the answer is no. How long have you been trying for? Are you also on medication?

    Hi,

I know its difficult to know that you’re HIV+, but one thing for sure is that its best to know your status. Being HIV+ doesn’t mean its the end of the world. The best news is this nowadays you can have as many kids as you like, as long as you’re taking your meds everyday.

At the same time its, important to tell your partner about it. If he really loves you , he will support you.

    Hi Lenah,

First off, give yourself some time. Slow down, and breath. If there’s someone you can talk to, have a chat with them. Or approach a support group.

Being told you’re HIV positive can be hard to digest. You will though be OK. Being positive in 2017 is very different to how it used to be. Treatment is excellent and it really does work.

Telling people can be hard, you’re not alone in feeling this. However, it can be done. If you’ve been having unprotected sex with your boyfriend then there is a possibility that he is also positive. Therefore, ideally he needs to test.

As to whether you should tell him, I can’t answer this. But try and imagine how you would feel if he knew he was positive and didn’t tell you.

Maybe you could ask him what his thoughts are in relation to HIV?

If you do tell him, and you do break up, yes this might be hard, however, relationships begin and end all of the time.

Since your diagnoses have you been told what your CD4 count is? And viral load? Have you started meds?

I just find out that am HIV positive…I’m too scared to ask my boyfriend to go and get tested as well. What if he is also infected ..will he break up with me?
