How can I get pregnant when I am HIV positive?

Can you please give me information on the right procedure in getting pregnant when you are HIV positive?
Answer
Thank you for your question.
There are different options as regards getting pregnant when you are HIV positive.
The options take into consideration whether your partner is also HIV positive or whether they are HIV negative.
As you have not indicated this in your email, I am sending you our general guide on HIV, pregnancy and women’s health. The guide includes detailed information on the various options available. Please follow this link to this guide to HIV and pregnancy for more information.

Hi City guy,
Being positive shouldn’t be a barrier to having a family. Is your partner positive, or are they negative? Are you on meds?
I’m a HIV positive man and want to start a family.
Hi Mpumi,
It is possible to have a reversal as the following link discusses:
http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/contraception-guide/Pages/sterilisation-reversal-NHS.aspx
However, as to whether it’s offered where you live, you will need to inquire about this. Maybe you could ask in the hospital where you were sterilized.
Hi, I am HIV positive and with 3 negative kids. I did sterilization after the last one and now I recently got married to my husband who is also HIV positive and we really want to have a child of our own, is it possible for me to conceive again?
thank you

I’m positive and want to get pregnant.
Hi Rosy,
There’s no reason why you being positive should influence your decision to start a family, as the above post explains.
Also if you’re on meds and have an undetectable viral load then you can conceive naturally. This is because the risk of transmission when you have an undetectable viral load is close to zero. Please see the results of the PARTNER study for more info:

Hi, my partner is negative and I’m HIV positive, we really want to have a baby, is this possible?
Hi Nthabiseng,
There’s no reason why you can’t have kids. As long as you’re on meds and have an undetectable viral load the baby should be fine. Please read the above post and this link:
