Question
Shall I tell my company?

Hi Guys,
My job as a microbiologist involves testing Hep c + controls, cmv + controls, HIV1/2 assays and cancer assays for prostate specific antigen.
I know there is a biohazardous risk and we use protective equipment but I am worried since I am HIV+. Does the CMV pose a risk to me?
Also the company monitors employees’ health by doin blood tests, etc.
The HIV specialist I see says to tell them I have diabetes and my own doctor monitors my blood so there’s no need for them to take blood.
Whilst a nurse at the gum clinic said if the company does not specificially ask I dont have to tell them.
I know I am protected under Irish law and they can’t fire me but all this has me worried.
Answer
You are not at any particular risk as long as you follow the exact regulations for work safety. They are designed for every lab technician and if followed thoroughly you’ll be fine.
As for whether you need to tell them or not, I am not particularly aware of the legislation in Ireland. Some people prefer to discuss it with the employer, others do not. Maybe it is a good idea to find som time and discuss it with a lawyer or an activists group in Ireland. The right information will definitely give you some piece of mind.

Hello,
I hope this can help you out. I thought about moving back home before. I work in the medical profession. I spoke to a very informative and helpfull lady on the telephone. This was at Open Heart House……….a HIV charity based organisation in Dublin. Just google it. They were so helpfull. Im 100% positive that they will research all your questions for you.
God Luck.
