Which organisation shall I make a donation to?

I want to donate to a charity or organisation that will use the funds to directly search for 1) a cure or 2) a long term treatment option.
I understand the importance of prevention, however, there appears to be quite a bit of funding going towards prevention and would like to focus my contrbution on folks already living with the disease.
Can you recomend an organisation(s) in the US, UK, or elswhere in the world.

If you could provide us with an idea about the amount that you intend to donate (so that the best use of your money can be made) to questions@i-base.org.uk , I will make sure, we suggest some institutions that will use it appropriately.
The thing is that some larger institutions collect donations via agencies (this is when the donations are smaller), to others you can donate directly (even if the donation is several pound/dollars), while others receive larger donations…
