What are the impacts of swine flu in HIV-positive people?
The UK government has said that if this turns into a pandemic they are prepared with stocks of antivirals (Tamiflu and Relenza ).
I’m an HIV-positive individual who is taking Atripla. My viral load is undetectable and have a CD4 count that is over 850. If i was to contract swine flu would it be any more dangerous for me than a HIV-negative person.
Would the above antivirals used to treat swine flu interact with the medication that I’m currently taking?
Answer
Hi
Thanks for your question.
Most of your concerns are covered in this answer and in the online links that it includes. With a CD4 count over 850 your risks would be considered similar to that of an HIV-negative person.
There are no known interactions between HIV drugs and the drugs that are being recommended to treat swine flu (oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza).
