Question

Could a pain in my side be related to pro-biotic use?

Hi there

I have been diagnosed HIV-positive since September 2007 and went onto HAART on last August using Atripla (tenofovir+FTC+efavirenz) which I take at 10pm at night.

I have read online that HIV-positive people are prone to gut infections etc so I bought some probiotic supplements with 10 million bacteria in them which I was taking after breakfast around 715am.

After a couple of weeks I started to wake up early in the mornings (around 4.30am) with a tender pain in my right hand side (swollen feeling), I tried to contact my HIV doctor but as she was on holiday I went into the walk-in clinic. I was assessed by a nurse, but after waiting over two hours I had to get back to work so did not get chance to see anyone.

I’ve stopped taking the probiotic supplement now and last week it seemed to have eased, however the last couple of mornings I have woke up early again with a much milder discomfort on my right hand side just about my waistband. What could this be?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

As with any physical symptom that is causing you pain or that you are worried about, you need see your doctor.

It is unlikely to be related to pro-biotic use, but you need to seek medical advice from a doctor.
