Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

Hi Yoleka, you are right that these are different but they still are used to do the same thing. Where are you? Many countries like South Africa are switching people from Atroiza (Atripla) to Acriptega (TLD) because this different combination is generally better tolerated by people. Have you started taking this different medication yet?

Hey I’m using atroiza but when I told them yesterday that my medication is finished they gave me acriptega without knowing that they’re not the same…so should I drink the meds or should I go to the clinic again?

Hi Lindiwe, have you changed your diet at all? If you take Atroiza when you are eating a high fat meal, more of Atroiza will be absorbed by the body and side effects can become more pronounced.

Hi Mercy, I am so sorry to hear this. Have you been able to speak to anyone about this? When did this event happen? If you are within 72 hours of this occurring you should be able to access Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). This manages to reduce risk of HIV transmission after a possible exposure and is a course of tablets for 28 days.

In addition, you should know that transmission of HIV is rare. There are a number of factors that will alter this risk, however I know the anxiet and fear about being unsure can be really difficult. This is a link about how to deal with this: https://i-base.info/guides/testing/hiv-testing-feelings-of-fear-anxiety-and-guilt

I then noticed that he didn’t use protection
    I managed to record him

Hi Lebo, did you use a condom? or is your partner undetectable on medication? If this was the case there would be no risk. HIV transmission from one event is very rare. There are also a number of factors that alter your level or risk. Please follow this link: https://i-base.info/guides/testing/risks-for-transmission

It is much more likely that you will be HIV negative than become positive.

Hi. I got Intimate with my partner who is HIV positive and I am negative. I went to the doctor and he gave me atroiza to take it for a period of a month, I stopped taking these drugs after 6 days because side effects were not bearable. I’m I on the safe side of not being positive?
