Question

Can ARVs cause my skin to change colour?

I have been on Efavirenz and Dumiva since testing HIV+ in May 2016. After about 3 months after taking treatment I noticed that the skin on my hands and top of my feet was darker than usual. Is hyperpigmentation a known side effect of the ART’s mentioned above ?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

ARVs are not known to cause changes in skin colour.  Therefore, you may need to talk to a skin specialist.

Hello knowledge and thanks for getting in touch.

There are always side effects with every medication but not everyone will get them.

Face rash is not one previously reported for ARVs.

It’s also very weird to be getting them now after 5 years on the same medication – most side effects will present themselves within the first few months.

I would suggest monitoring them closely, including any changes in hygiene products, washing powders, and food.

It might also be a good idea to discuss with your doctor as they might want to run tests or prescribe medication that might help you.

Hi Lee, have you spoken to a doctor about this change? How have they changed colour e.g., are they darker, like a rash, is there redness?

    Hi Martha,

This is something that your husband is going to need to discuss with his doctor. TB medication isn’t know to make a persons skin colour darker.
