Q and A

Question

I’ve been positive for 10 years, what’s my life expectancy?

I was diagnosed with HIV when I was 50, it’s now been 10 years. At the time of my diagnoses my CD4 was less than 200, it’s now well within normal levels. My viral load is undetectable. How long will I live for?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

No one can predict how long someone will live for, however if your HIV is under control (which is sounds like it is) there’s no reason why your life expectancy will be influenced by your HIV. Please see Q 10 here: https://i-base.info/qa/what-are-the-most-asked-questions

Hi Mohammed, a positive result is positive regardless of the brightness of the line. It is good that you have started your medication immediately. Doing so will help manage HIV and keep your viral load low. Life expectancy for HIV positive people is the same as someone who is HIV negative. Being healthy and staying on your medication will mean HIV does not affect you reaching 40.

    Good day doctor
I was 18 when I was diagnosed of HIV which came out positive. The nurse used a HIV strip which the positive result was very low(I mean the second line is not bright that’s it can’t be see clearly) please what does that mean sir! And it was my first symptoms (serious typhoid) and I begin my med immediately!

And please what my life expectations? Will I be able to attain 40years?
