Question

Can I have a vaccination for yellow fever?

I’m planning a trip to Latin America and it’s recommended to have a yellow fever vaccination. My CD4 count is about 456 and my viral load is undetectable. Is it safe for me to have the vaccination?

Answer

Current UK Department of Health recommendations for yellow fever vaccination exclude those with HIV infection at all stages, whilst the American Advisory Committee on Immunisation Practices (ACIP), recommends it may be given to those travelling to high risk areas with a CD4 count >200 cells/mm3

HIV-positive people in your situation have used successfully the vaccine in the past. It is still a good idea to weigh the possible risks of infection in the countries where you intend to travel and then make your mind whether to go for a vaccination.
