Question

Will there ever be a one pill a day formulation of Kaletra?

Will there ever be a one pill per day formulation of Kaletra? This four pills a day thing is gettng old. It works great and no side effects but I don’t understand why it’s taking so long to put the potency of four pills into one pill.

I take all four of my pills at once so it would be great for me.

Answer

Hi

I haven’t heard about research to reduce the pill count of Kaletra. Not all drugs can be made into once-daily single pills. Or they could, but the pill would then be too big to swallow. This is because some meds need higher quantities of the active ingredients. Kaletra was originally produced in a capsules formulation that required taking three capsules twice-daily so the current table formulation has improved since then.

Alternative PIs (such as atazanavir or darunavir) have slightly fewer daily pills but also require a separate dose of ritonavir to boost them, so the final pill count for the PI component is still 2 or 3 pills daily.
