Q and A

Question

My baby is quite small, should I be worried?

I tested HIV positive when pregnant and took AZT From 21 weeks.

My son tested negative to HIV with antibodies at birth, 1 month and 3 months and due another test at 18 months.

My concern is that he is smaller than other babies. Could it be his frame or should I worry?

Answer

Thank-you for your question. And congratulations on the birth of your son!

UK best practice is to test babies at birth, six weeks and three months. If all of these tests are negative, and you are not breastfeeding your baby, then your baby is not HIV positive. The 18 month test shows that your antibodies are no longer in your babies system. More than anything the 18 months test is really an additional test for your peace of mind.

If you are worried about your baby’s weight you can speak to your midwife.

With all these negative results you can start to relax and enjoy being a mum!
