Question

Can I use EMS if I am HIV-positive?

I have started exercising – swimming 3 times a week and also some weight work. I have also started using Electrical Muscle Stimulation for my abs (won’t use the brand name!)

Is EMS safe with HIV and/or meds? (I’m on Truvada/Reyataz&Norvir).

I know it may sound like a silly question, but the equipment does mention diabetes, and says any other serious illness should be checked.

Answer

Firstly, thank you for not using the brand name :)

It is safe to use EMS. The concern is usually with conditions like hepatitis and when several people use the tool, as sometimes the plaques can provoke a slight bleeding. The EMS will not have an effect on your HIV or activity of the medications.

Lets just hope it has an effect on my abs!

Thanks as always for your help. It really is a great help knowing you are here to respond to us. It’s been a scary year for me since I was diagnosed and starting meds (and having to switch already because of side effects). What a rollercoaster year, but I have found i-Base the most helpful website out there! So informative and easy to understand.

I hope you get told this often – the work you do is appreciated so much. When it comes down to it, we are people who just sometimes need reassurance and support – I have a great consultant, but am glad of the additional support you provide.

    Thank you!
    Chris
