Q and A

Question

I’m 43 and having problems conceiving

Hi, I am 43 and have been trying for a baby since last year September. I have been on sustiva and kivexa for almost 8 years. My husband is negative. What are my chances? I am losing hope and really want a baby.

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

If you are having difficulties conceiving it’s a good idea to talk to a doctor.

Although many women have had babies in their 40s the older we get, the less fertile we become. So for instance, it is much easier for a woman in her 30s to get pregnant than it is for a woman in her 40s.

Having said that though, the chances of a couple conceiving also depends on a number of other factors. These include how fertile a couple are; whether they can both conceive naturally; whether they try and conceive at the time when the woman is most fertile (during ovulation) or it can also simply be down to luck.  Some couples only need to have sex once before the woman gets pregnant, whereas it can take many years of trying for other couples to conceive.

The best thing to do will be contact your doctor. S/he will be able to provide you with more information and support based on your personal situation.

    Hi Nozipho,

Short answer: absolutely yes, but you need to use HIV treatment (ART).

It is easy and safe to conceive naturally. And you can give birth to a negative baby. Please see our pregnancy guide for much more info.
