Q and A

Question

Can I take doxycycline with ARVs?

I have just been given doxycycline 100mg and I’m currently on ARVs, will this have a negative effect?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

For me to be able to answer this I’ll need to know what ARVs it is that you’re taking. If you could get back in touch I’ll be able to help you.

Hi Joy, Atroiza contains efavirenz which can have a potential interaction with doxycycline – the risk of this interaction is very low. Efavirenz can reduce how much doxycycline is absorbed by the body. For this reason enough may not be absorbed to work for your acne. If you take doxycycline 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking Atroiza there will be no interaction. Each drug will be absorbed.

    Hi Anonymous,

Yes it’s OK to take Doxycycline with your meds, there won’t be an interaction.

Hi Catherine, using all these meds together ifs fine. Although I know Dumiva is abacavir plus lamivudine, I am not sure whether etrin refers to etravirine or efavirenz. Either way, any possible interaction to though to be minimal, based on they report from Liverpool University:
