Q and A

Question

I’ve just started meds, will I infect my partner?

I started ARVS a month ago, I’m not using condoms with my negative partner. Will they be infected.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Unless your viral load is undetectable, which is very unlikely because you’ve just been on meds for a month, then yes there is a risk that you could have, or might transmit HIV to your negative partner. Therefore, its important that they test, and that you use condoms.

Once your viral load becomes undetectable, the yes its safe to have sex without a condom. For more info, please see here:

    Hi Jones,

If your partner is on treatment and undetectable then there is no risk. See U=U it says “A person living with HIV who has undetectable viral load does not transmit HIV to their partners”. If you’re worried you might be positive then it’s good to test and find out.

    Hi Thandi,

If you’re having problems with your meds, you should talk to your doctor. They should be able to change you onto something else.
Info about viral loads can be found here:
