Q and A

Question

I’m undetectable, can I transmit HIV to my partner?

I’m positive and undetectable. My girlfriend is negative, can I transmit HIV to her?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

When a person has an undetectable viral load, they cannot transmit HIV through sexual intercourse when not using a condom. There’s more about this here:

    Hi King,
It’s a good idea to get these symptoms checked out by a doctor to find out what’s causing them. However, 95% of people develop antibodies to HIV within 4 weeks, and will get an HIV positive result. Your negative result is a good sign. But you can have another test to confirm the HIV negative result after 8 more weeks.

    Hello Prince,
The aim of HIV treatment (ART) is to get your viral load result to undetectable. That means the result should be under 50 copies/mL. Being undetectable gives your CD4 count the chance to recover. And then you can expect not to be at increased risk of other infections. Here’s a picture showing CD4 count and HIV once you start treatment.
It’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about all your symptoms including your stomach ulcer. Stomach ulcers can be treated too.

    Hi Prince.

I’d like to think that a cure will be found, however its very unlikely that this will happen by 2020. For now we have ARVs which are excellent at controlling HIV.
