Q and A

Question

I’m pregnant, but I don’t want to take medication.

I’m HIV positive and pregnant. I don’t want to take treatment, will my baby be infected with the virus?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

If you’re aware of your status and you choose not to use ARVs during your pregnancy, you’re putting the health and well being of your child at risk. This isn’t something that a child deserves.

All pregnant HIV positive women should be on medication, this is because it’s the medication that drastically reduces the risk of transmission. Please see here: https://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy

You haven’t said why you don’t want to take ARVs, however it’s common that people are scared to start them. If this is the reason it’s important to know that not only will they benefit your child, they’ll also benefit you as the following explains: https://i-base.info/guides/side
