Q and A

Question

When should I test again?

Question:

For two months I had unprotected sex with an HIV positive partner. Six weeks and eight weeks later I had two HIV tests and both came back negative. The last one was a BioLine HIV 1/2 3, 4th Generation and I do no remember what the first one was. Should I go on testing and when?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

HIV test results are accurate as long as they are taken at the recommended time after exposure.

If you are in a relationship with someone who is HIV positive and you do not want to become infected then you should use condoms during sex. Your level of risk also depends on whether your partner is on HIV treatments or not.

UK guidelines (BASHH) recommend that a negative test 90 days after exposure is considered accurate.

He should test at 3 months as the bioline test is an antibody test only. If he has already had 2 negative tests then it is extremely unlikely his third test result would be positive.

    Hi Winnie,
You did not answer the question clearly. When should he test again if needed?
