Question

Can I have a child naturally?

I am HIV positive man and living in a country where there’s no sperm washing, can I still be able to have a child naturally?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

It is still possible to have a child naturally. Is your partner also positive? If so then as long as both of you are stable and on treatment form over 6 months then you should be able to have a child natuarally and that child to be HIV negative. For more information please follow this link.

If your partner is HIV negative then there are things you can do to ensure she stays negative as does your baby whilst conceiving naturally. For example, you should work with your doctor to find out the times that your partner is most fertile and only have unprotected sex during that week. You should also make sure you are stable on treatment and have been on treatment for HIV for longer than 6 months. It is very important that your partner is aware of the risks and understands the procedure. For more information please follow this link.

It may also help you to read the Swiss Statement which states that the transmission risk for someone on stable therapy is “negligible” and “similar to risks of daily life”
