Q and A

Question

Can HIV medication cause miscarriage at 1 week?

Hi, can HIV medication terminate 1 week pregnancy?

Thank you.

Answer

Thank you for your question.

We are not aware of any studies that directly link HIV treatment to being a cause of miscarriages at 1 week of pregnancy.

The only data we have is that an HIV positive woman might take longer to conceive.

However, the course of pregnancy does not differ from that of a negative woman, particularly if she is on antiretroviral HIV meds.

Hi Udeme, I am sorry to hear that you have had miscarriages. Have you been investigated for possible reasons for this? HIV alone and if you are on medication will not increase your risk of miscarriage. At what point in the pregnancy are you having them? Unfortunately your age may contribute to these miscarriages. Above 35 and 3 out of 10 pregnancies will be miscarried. Have you spoken with anyone about possible options you have available to you to help?
