Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Kgaogelo, thanks. Being on PrEP for 14 days is enough for you to have good drug levels that will protect against HIV. Please remember to continue taking daily PrEP afterwards too. This guide has more info:

This information will help you feel more confident and aware about risk and health. It should help make sex more enjoyable with less worry.

I had unprotected sex with hiv unknown status partner after 42 hours I started taking pep. Next day, she had tested hiv negative with home test kit. But, I worried that she is in window period. So, I am taking pep continuously. After taking 6 days pep, I had unprotected sex with my wife. Can I infect her and should she also take pep.

Hi Dory, yes PEP will still work. You can continue to take your treatment. There is no interaction between PEP and the vaccines you have mentioned.

Hi I’m on my 7th day of PEP. I was bitten by a stray cat and have my rabbies booster and anti tetanus. Is HIV pep still works?

Hi Alf, there is no risk to your wife as you are on PEP. While on PEP there is either no presence of HIV or HIV is suppressed so much that it is impossible to pass on HIV.

More information about PEP can be found here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/pep-faq
