Q and A

Question

Does Trustiva cause stomach problems?

After recently using Trustiva tablets for HIV, some digestion and motion problems occurred for a few times. Is this routinely caused by the the tablet or is it caused by other factors?

Answer

Trustiva is a generic versions of Atripla. It is a tablet containing three different drugs: FTC, tenofovir and efavirenz.

I am sorry that you are having problems with your stomach. You mention that you are experiencing problems with your digestion and bowel movements. Does this also include diarrhea?

All ARVs have the potential to cause stomach and digestion problems, especially when just starting treatment. However, these are usually mild and generally either resolve or are easy to treat. It is also common to think that anything you experience when on treatment is a side effect. Often though, a stomach upset can just as easily be cause by sometime you have eaten or a different infection.

As will any symptom, if this continues and you are worried, this is something to ask your doctor about.

These links include more information on each drug, including some of the side effects.

The problems you describe are not normally caused by any of these drugs. Flatulence (wind), has sometimes been reported with tenofovir, but this is not common. If you continue to experience the problems you describe, you need to discuss it with your doctor. He/she will diagnose what is causing them and treat you for this.

    Hi Ron,

When starting meds it’s common to feel dizzy, this is especially the case with the ARVs that you’re taking, please see here: https://i-base.info/guides/1561 The dizziness should go within a few weeks, if you’re still having issues after this, please consult your doctor.

As you’re new to medication you might find the following helpful: https://i-base.info/guides/starting and https://i-base.info/guides/side

    Hi Greg,

If you’ve a fail where your liver is, this is something that you need to discuss with your doctor. It could be related to the meds, however it could be something else.

I have just switched to Trustiva about 3 weeks ago. Previously I was on Atripla for 4 years. I have developed a pain in my liver area. Could this be contributed to Tustiva?.
    Thank you
