On 16 June 2025, the new leadership at the US National Institute of Health HIV) notified members of the HIV clinical guidelines panels of funding changes.
These DHHS evidence-based guidelines have been produce for almost 30 years and were routinely revised and updated at least annually, and often more than once a year.
Although funding is secured until 2026 it is likely that production will need to transition to an alternative structure. Broad input is being sought for all stakeholders for the future plans.
This process in described inn more detail at an open meeting held on 26 June that discussed future plans for the guidelines, now available to watch online (discussion starts at 1 hour 34 minutes). [2]
This meeting stressed that there has never been any indication to stop producing these guidelines. The motivation for upcoming changes is financial and due to overall budget cuts, even though much of the academic expertise is donated and voluntary.
It also appeared that the annual budget for the administration and distribution of the guidelines wasn’t known and requests for greater transparency were also called for.
