Can I get PrEP privately in the UK?

Can I get PrEP privately in the UK?

Answer

Hi

Yes, most doctors would be able to prescribe PrEP as a private prescription.

This might be expensive though and costs might vary a lot between doctors.

Some UK clinics are now offering PrEP as a private service, including 56 Dean Street in Soho, London. The prices at Dean Street have clearly been kept close to cost price, and have been lowered since the initial launch.

The additional tests for PrEP are very important. These tests include HIV testing and monitoring for kidney function.

The NHS is likely to benefit from experience at the private clinic when this does become a free option based purely on risk and need.

    Hi Martin.

This will depend on which country it is that you live in. The rules change depending on where it is that you live in the UK. In Scotland you GP should give you PrEP. In England its very unlikely that they will. If you’re in England the best thing to do is contact your local GUM clinic.

Hello Lesiba, Unfortunately, PrEP is only for people who are HIV negative. It protects against HIV.

The good news is that for HIV positive people, starting treatment (ART) can help your baby to be healthy and HIV negative. You can find out more about having a baby in the i-Base guide to HIV, pregancy and women’s health..

If i’m HIV positive & my partner is – can we go for PreP to have a baby and stop after and continue to condomise.
