Q and A

Question

Can i change the time i take my ARVs?

I take my ARVs at 8am and 8pm. Can i change it to 10am and 10pm?

Answer

Hi,

This is not a problem as long as you consistently take them at the new time. Jumping back and forth mean you have a risk of developing resistance. This would mean your meds would stop working well.

People do change the time they take their meds for all sorts of reasons though. Again this is ok as long as you keep taking regularly at the new time.

The only concern about switching from evening to morning is if your combination include the drug efavirenz. Efavirenz needs to be taken 1-2 hours before you sleep, so you reduce side effects.

    Hi Lungisani,

Acriptega is tenofovir, lamivudine and dolutegravir put into a single pill. You can take this at whatever time of the day is best for you and your schedule. You can take it with or without food. It works fine either way.

    Hi Ivy,

Acriptega is a single pill that contains tenofovir DF, lamivudine (3TC) and dolutegravir. It’s fine to take these ARVs with or without food. They work just as well either way.

Did you have another question, Ivy?

    Hi Shaz,

Yes, you can. And it’s probably better if you miss this evening dose just this once.

But this can depend on what meds you’re taking. And if you have to do this often, for example because of shift work, it’s not a good idea to keep missing doses.

So please let us know what meds you’re taking. And if you have access to your CD4 count and viral load results, please tell us what they are.

    Hi Karabo,

I’m sorry to hear this. But there’s no reason to think this is very bad. Do you know why your mum hasn’t taken her meds?

Perhaps there was a stock out. Or maybe it’s because of side effects.

So it’s a good idea for your mum to contact the clinic and explain what’s happened. She can ask what she can do. For example, if there are side effects, she can ask if there are meds that are easier for her to take.

My mum has not taken her ARVs for two days now. How bad can it be?

    Hi Letlotlo,

ARVs should be taken ideally at roughly the same time everyday, so taking them 10, 20, 60 mins either side of your normal time will be fine.

Greetings, for the past three days I have been missing my ARV time by 10 min, 20 min and today was an hour, am I at any risk? But before this past week I have been on time every day, I drink them at 8:30 in the morning. Thank you
