Q and A

Question

Can i change the time i take my ARVs?

I take my ARVs at 8am and 8pm. Can i change it to 10am and 10pm?

Answer

Hi,

This is not a problem as long as you consistently take them at the new time. Jumping back and forth mean you have a risk of developing resistance. This would mean your meds would stop working well.

People do change the time they take their meds for all sorts of reasons though. Again this is ok as long as you keep taking regularly at the new time.

The only concern about switching from evening to morning is if your combination include the drug efavirenz. Efavirenz needs to be taken 1-2 hours before you sleep, so you reduce side effects.

    Hi Sthabile,

If you’re asking if ARVs are a life long treatment, the answer is yes. The reason for this is that there isn’t yet a cure for HIV. If you’re asking if you’ll be using the same medication, this is likely to change as advancements are made. For now the important thing is that you’re using ARVs and that the Aluvia brings your viral load down. Other than the Aluvia, what else are you taking? I’m asking as this isn’t a full combination of ARVs.

    Hi Sive

I’ve been sick since 2015. I work shifts, by the time I was put on treatment I took leave from work as there was days when the medication made me sick and working night shifts taking that tablet #the side effects it has in the beginning. But as time goes by your body gets use to it and you don’t experience any side effects

Best advice stick to a certain time which suits you best.. rather take your medz 5pm everyday so that it won’t be affected by your schedule or take it at a time which suits you best

    Hi Sive,

ARVs should be taken at a time that works for you and your life style. If you want to change, then yes change. However, if you’re taking ARVs can contain efavirenz these should ideally be taken at night due to the possible side effects.
