Q and A

Question

Can i change the time i take my ARVs?

I take my ARVs at 8am and 8pm. Can i change it to 10am and 10pm?

Answer

Hi,

This is not a problem as long as you consistently take them at the new time. Jumping back and forth mean you have a risk of developing resistance. This would mean your meds would stop working well.

People do change the time they take their meds for all sorts of reasons though. Again this is ok as long as you keep taking regularly at the new time.

The only concern about switching from evening to morning is if your combination include the drug efavirenz. Efavirenz needs to be taken 1-2 hours before you sleep, so you reduce side effects.

Hi Relo, Ranega is okay for you to take while pregnant. It is a recommended choice of medication and is the best way to keep both you and baby healthy.

Ranega is a medication better taken in the morning. This is because it contains dolutegravir. This is a drug that can cause problems sleeping. Taking it earlier in the day will help to prevent this side effects.

Hi Thandy, I am sorry to hear what happened to you. Have you been able to get support from anyone e.g., friends/family, police or even your doctor?

Being 30 minutes late with PEP is not going to reduce how effective it is. Now that you have switched to 14:00 it is okay to continue with PEP at this time.

Hi Nombuso, Meyteladov is recommended to be taken in the evening. This is to help sleep some of the side effects that you may experience e.g., mood changes. However if this is not suitable for you, you can switch the time of your medication to the morning. Though you may experience some changes in your mood.

Hi Elsie, yes it is okay for you to do this. What is the name of the medication you are taking? Some HIV meds are better taken at certain parts of the day to avoid side effects. But if you are managing well and you do not have any side effects, you can take your treatment at the time that best suits you.

Hi Almost, yes this is okay to do. The best way to do this would be take your treatment as normal at 6 in the morning. Then the same day take your medication again at 9 in the evening. You can then continue from 9 in the evening from this point.
