Q and A

Question

Can i change the time i take my ARVs?

I take my ARVs at 8am and 8pm. Can i change it to 10am and 10pm?

Answer

Hi,

This is not a problem as long as you consistently take them at the new time. Jumping back and forth mean you have a risk of developing resistance. This would mean your meds would stop working well.

People do change the time they take their meds for all sorts of reasons though. Again this is ok as long as you keep taking regularly at the new time.

The only concern about switching from evening to morning is if your combination include the drug efavirenz. Efavirenz needs to be taken 1-2 hours before you sleep, so you reduce side effects.

    Hi Es,

If you want to change the time of when you take your meds then you can. Just start taking them at the time that you want when you’re ready. For example if you usually take them at 10pm, take them at 10pm then again in the morning. You’ll be fine doing this.

    Hi Maki,

A CD4 of 380 is fine, more so because your boyfriend is on meds. As long as he takes his meds, he’ll be fine, this is because his HIV will be under control.

With regards to the weight loss, this could be due to a number of reason, of which stress is one. How much weight has he lost and over what period of time?

    Hi Poet,

You taking your meds betwen 8 and 9pm won’t be the reason why you’ve been losing weight. Therefore this is something that you should tall to a doctor about. Furthermore, weight loss can be due to a lot of things, of which stress is one.

    Hi Charmaine,

Its recommended to take Atrozia at night due to the possible side effects that some people may have. However, there’s no reason why you can’t take it in the morning.
