Q and A

Question

How long does an HIV negative infant take the Ilvitrim syrup?

For how long can an infant take the ilvitrim suspension syrup when tested negative?

Answer

Hi

Please ask your doctor about this. The doctor will tell you why it is important and how long it need to be used for.

Usually it will be for at least 18 months. However, it also needs to be continued if breastfeeding is longer than this.

Ilvitrim syrup is a combination of two antibiotics. It protects your baby from different infections.

    Hi Vovo,
Please can you talk to the nurse about this dose and treatment? Newborn babies are often given nevirapine for a few weeks after they are born. But the dose is worked out according to the baby’s weight. So talking to the nurse or doctor is important for getting the right treatment for your baby.

    Hi Trish,
Sorry, we are not doctors at i-Base so you need to ask your doctor. Doctrim Suspension is an antibiotic and can be given to children if they have or are at risk of infections such as pneumonia. Please call the doctor and check on the reason for this treatment and also for how many weeks it should be used.

    Hi Anika,
Ilvitrim syrup is an antibiotic and can protect your baby from bacterial infections, but not viral infections. Do you mean your viral load is undetectable? Being undetectable can help protect your baby if you exclusively breastfeed. You can talk to the doctor about the the change of dose for ilvitrim. You can check with the doctor about why your baby needs the antibiotic, and what the correct dose is.
