Q and A

Question

Are fatty lumps around the neck and shoulders linked to a type of ARV?

Why is that certain people bulge, starting from the neck to the shoulders. Is it a type of ARV they take?

Answer

Fat accumulation is now much less common with modern ARVs. But it can occur in the stomach, breasts, neck and shoulders. The small bumps of fat under the skin are called lipomas.

However, diet, exercise and some treatments may help. Using more than one approach may be important. For example, using diet and exercise in addition to anything else that you try.

Unfortunately, studies switching individual drugs have been less helpful with fat accumulation than with fat loss. But, in theory, if one particular drug is linked to these body changes then it’s very reasonable to at least try another one, in case this works for you.
