Q and A

Question

Is my baby at risk of HIV from breastfeeding?

can a baby get HIV after just one day of breastfeed?

Answer

Congratulations on your new baby.

Recommendations on feeding your baby are different in different countries. So long as you have clean water to make the formula feed this is the safest but only if you can keep using formula feed. Other countries recommend breastfeeding as long as the mother is on treatment. Do you mind me asking if you are taking HIV treatment? If you are then the risk of transmission is low, especially for one day.

It is also not good for the baby to keep changing from between formula and breastfeeding – this increases the risk for the baby. Please speak to your doctor for advice on feeding your baby.
