Question

What is Tribuss used for?

My partner and I tested negative, however when she had a miscarriage she was given a med called Tribuss. I thought this was a HIV med.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Yes Tribuss is used to treat HIV. Therefore, I am not sure why your negative partner would be given Tribuss following a miscarriage. Owning to this, she should speak to the doctor who prescribed this to her.

    Hi Basi,

As long as you continue to take your meds and your viral load is undetectable the risk to your baby will be minimal. Please see here: http://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy

    Hi Koena,

Many people who use Tribuss have sex without using condoms. That’s because if you’re taking Tribuss and your blood test for viral load is undetectable, you cannot transmit HIV. That’s even if you don’t use condoms.

Please see Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) here. I hope this U=U info will make things clear.

    Hi Kenneth,

Perhaps you could try talking about this. You could ask her exactly what the pills are for, but it’s good not to confront anyone when you’re asking questions like this.

If they are for treating HIV then her treatment can be protecting you from HIV. When people start HIV treatment it dramatically reduces the chances of transmission.

You can look up Undetectable = Untransmittable here.

    Hi Nelly,

It’s great that you’ve been discharged from TB.

But sorry, we are not doctors at i-Base. If you have a bad cough it’s a good idea to see the doctor about it.

Do your have access to your results for CD4 and viral load? If you have these results you can check to see that Tribuss is working well.

    Hi Julia,

Its great to see that your HIV is under control, this is fantastic. With regards to needing to continue, the answer is yes. Until a cure for HIV is found, ARVs are a life long treatment. If you were to stop them your HIV would no longer be under control. Please see Q7 here: http://i-base.info/qa/what-are-the-most-asked-questions
