Question

What is Tribuss used for?

My partner and I tested negative, however when she had a miscarriage she was given a med called Tribuss. I thought this was a HIV med.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Yes Tribuss is used to treat HIV. Therefore, I am not sure why your negative partner would be given Tribuss following a miscarriage. Owning to this, she should speak to the doctor who prescribed this to her.

    Hi Shyness,

It’s great that you and your partner want to have a kid. And it sounds like the doctor has given you good advice. Absolutely yes, you can have a kid. But your partner needs to use HIV treatment (ART).

So before you do sex without condoms your partner needs to take ART. And his viral load needs to be undetectable. You can ask the doctor for this test. An undetectable blood test means a result of less than 50 copies/mL. Please see the Partner study where couples had condomless sex 58,000 times without linked transmission of HIV.

You can read more here about Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U). And here’s the guide to HIV pregnancy and women’s health.

You can talk to your doctor about why he gave you Tribuss. Tribuss is a treatment for HIV. But if you want to protect yourself against HIV you can ask the doctor to give you PrEP instead. PrEP is a pill with just 2 drugs in it. But it works well as protection for people who are HIV negative.

    Hi Cndy,

Odimune and tribuss are both generic versions of Atripla, it’s common to switch between them.
