Q and A

Question

Can I stop breastfeeding at 3 months?

Can I stop breastfeeding at 3 months instead of 6 cause my family doesn’t know and I have to go back to work.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

How long you breastfeed for is up to you. If you want to stop at 3 months then you can. If you’d like to continue to give your baby your milk, you could express it and give it to them in a bottle. Is this something that you’ve thought about?

If you do stop giving them your milk, its better that you don’t mix feed.

    Hi Buhle,

Breastfeeding guidelines vary depending on where it is that a woman lives. In the UK where i-based are based, breastfeeding isn’t recommended. If you want to ensure that there’s no risk, then formula is the appropriate option. However, this is a decision that you need to make and if possible with your medical team.

I’m a pregnant HIV mother expecting a baby girl in February my partner is HIV negative and we’ve discussed what method of feeding is best for our baby after she’s born. We made a decision to bottle feed her but using formula milk instead of breastmilk however I’d like to breastfeed her for 3 months to strengthen her immune system then switch to formula after her first 3 months is that a good decision or not?

    Please advice me

    Hi Mandlondlo,

It’s fine to switch from breastfeeding your baby to formula, this won’t be an issue. It’s great that her first test was negative, this is a really good sign.

    Hi Vivian,

If you’re taking HIV treatment (ART) and have an undetectable viral load, then it sounds like you’re doing all you can.

However, please talk to your doctor or nurse about the best way to feed your baby. That’s because guidelines for breastfeeding are linked to where you live. This includes the country, and also if this is in the city or countryside.

Please ask your doctor or nurse these questions. They can give the best advice for you and your baby.
