Q and A

Question

Can I stop breastfeeding at 3 months?

Can I stop breastfeeding at 3 months instead of 6 cause my family doesn’t know and I have to go back to work.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

How long you breastfeed for is up to you. If you want to stop at 3 months then you can. If you’d like to continue to give your baby your milk, you could express it and give it to them in a bottle. Is this something that you’ve thought about?

If you do stop giving them your milk, its better that you don’t mix feed.

    Hi Dimakatso,

You stopping breastfeeding won’t have any issue on your baby. You’ll need to do the switch to formula without mix feeding. Is your baby taking medication?

    Hi Anne,

As Lisa says above, if you want to breatfeed for 3 months you can. But she says that it’s better not to mix feed. So if you formula feed after 3 months, carry on just with formula.

    Hi Vovo.

Babies who are 2 months old do not need solid food, all they need is milk. Info about testing in babies can be found here: http://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy/hiv-negative

    Hi Thato,
As Lisa says above, you can switch to formula whenever you want. But if you do stop giving them your milk, its better that you don’t mix feed your baby with both breast and formula milk.

    Good Day Virginia,

As Lisa says on this Q&A, if you want to stop breastfeeding at 3 months, then you can.

But it’s better if you don’t mix feed both formula and breast milk.
