Q and A

Question

What if I miss a dose or take a double dose by mistake?

Hi, if i forget to take my pill on time, or maybe take it twice a day, without remembering i took it, then maybe overdose by mistake. Can it cause any harm to my health?

Answer

Missing an occasional pill is okay

Taking a double dose of HIV medication is usually okay  – but it is not a good idea. The main risk is that you might get side effects for a few hours due to the short time when you have higher drug levels.

Additional doses of other types of medication might require speaking to a doctor or pharmacist about the short term side effects.

It is better to get a pill box. Then you can see each day whether or not you have taken your meds. These are cheap and work really well.

Josh.

Hi Letitia, taking a double dose of DDAVP is not likely going to cause significant problems though you may experience more side effects than normal. If you remain concerned please speak to your pharmacist.

Should I be worried if I mistakenly took a double dose of DDAVP?

I took a second blood pressure tablet 14 hours after first by mistake. First in the morning at 5am the second at 7.30 this evening should I still take my daily early dose tomorrow ? Any symptoms I should be aware of ?

Hi Kyle, you should continue as normal with your HIV treatment. You should not skip a dose.

I took 2 delstrigo tablets yesterday by accident instead of 1 tablet.

What should I do today? Take it as usual or skip a dose.

Hi Felicity, a single double dose is unlikely to cause a problem. As this is a blood pressure tablet, you may have some lightheadedness when standing for the next day. After the dose of medication reduces in your body, this symptom should go away – if you experience it at all.If you do notice any other symptoms/or the symptoms are not going away, speak with your pharmacist about what to do.

I took 2 Amlodipines by accident at night time. Only once…what can happen

Hi Felicite, how long after taking your medication did you vomit? Vomiting within the hour after means that some/most of the medication will not have been absorbed. There would be no risk of double dosing. Later than this and the dose absorbed by your body will be higher. In most cases this is not a problem, especially with only doubling the dose. You may experience more side effects than normal. If this persists or at any point you are uncomfortable speak to your pharmacist/doctor and they will let you know what to do next.
