Q and A

Question

Will my baby be okay now I stopped giving him water?

My baby is 3 weeks 6 days, he is formula feeding and i just recently found out that i should not be giving him water when he is on nevirapine and i have stopped. What negative effects does this have on my son?

Answer

Hi

You are right that your baby doesn’t need water or any other foods – just the formula milk.

Now you have change to this it will be better.

Your son is likely to be fine now, but it is also good for your doctor and nurse to advise you on this.

Congratulations on your new son too.

    Hi Princess,

Congratulations on your new baby boy. But babies don’t need water or any other food. They just need milk.

Your doctor or nurse can give you the best advice on how to feed him. This can be different in different parts of the world. Formula feeding is recommended here in the UK. But in some countries HIV positive mothers can breastfeed exclusively for six months only and then wean their babies onto soft food. But mix feeding with both formula and breastmilk is not recommended.

    Hi Ayanda,

The question is, why was your baby taking co- trimoxazole? Co- trimoxazole is an antibiotic, it isn’t an ARV. Did you discuss this with your childs doctor first?

    Hi my name is Ayanda
I stop my child from breastfeeding and I gave him a formula and I decided to stop giving him a co- trimoxazole suspension.. should I be worried?

    Hi Nandipha,

If your baby isn’t sleeping well and you think that they’re not comfortable please consult a health care professional.

    Good day.

My Daughter is 11 days and on Nevirapine and Zidovudine, she was tested negative at birth, I’m HIV positive with an undetectable viral load and breastfeeding, my baby can not really sleep throughout the night as if she is pushing like she is constipated, at times i give her Panado, because i feel like she is feeling some sort of pain. Will this cause any effect on her current status?

    Hi Lindiwe,

Firstly, you baby doesn’t need water, all she needs is formula. With the overdosing, please talk to your babies doctor about this. If she’s over 4 weeks and on formula then she doesn’t ARVs.

Hi, I have found out that I’ve been overdosing my baby with nevaropine, instead of 1.5ml I gave her 2.5ml daily for 3 weeks and I’ve been giving her water. Should I be worried? Should I skip her daily doses of nevaropine? She’s on formula feeding. Please help.

    Hi Athi,

Babies don’t really need water, however is you think your child needs to have gripe water, please discuss this with your doctor.

    Hi
Is it safe to give my baby gripe water? She’s on NVP and a week old. She tested negative at birth. My viral load is undetectable and she’s on formula
