Q and A

Question

Tivicay and B12 and Folic Acid, will there be an issue?

I’m using Tivicay, is it OK to use B12 as well as folic acid?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

There is a possibility that there could be an interaction between the folic acid and the Tivicay as the following explains: https://www.hiv-druginteractions.org/downloads/ajd45jg-4er5-67oy-ur43-009ert.pdf?interaction_ids%5B%5D=82048&interaction_ids%5B%5D=82050

This is also the case the B12: https://www.hiv-druginteractions.org/downloads/ajd45jg-4er5-67oy-ur43-009ert.pdf?interaction_ids%5B%5D=82048

    Hi Mirza,
The link says that these have not been studied. However, the advice for multivitamins which do contain calcium etc, is not to take them the same time as dolutegravir. It says to take dolutegravir 2 hours before or six hours after taking multivitamins. In the absence of studies it could be a good idea to do this with your B12 and folic acid too.

I noticed this information using hiv drug interactions link, but these notes are more related to use of multivitamins where B12, folic acid can be present with polyvalent cations (calcium, magnesium, iron, etc.).

Is there any specific info only about B12 and folic acid, not multivitamin?

    Thank you!
