Q and A

Question

Can I work in the UK?

I am being offered a job in UK but I am HIV positive from last 7+ years undergoing ART treatment since I was diagnosed positive, is it ok or not?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Yes its OK for you to live in the UK, you being positive won’t be an issue.

You will also be able to get free HIV treatment and monitoring.

Please bring a summary of your medical history with you so the new doctor has these notes.

Please also get in touch with i-Base again if you need information about how to register at a clinic. It is good to bring at least a month of meds with you though – more if possible. This is so there is not a pressure on getting the new clinic with often takes a few weeks.

    Hi Sibil,

Please see this Q&A about choosing a clinic in the UK. If you are resident in the UK HIV treatment is free on the National Health Service (NHS).

Please bring an HIV treatment summary from your current clinic. It can help your new clinic to provide your treatment.

Does UK require HIV test for migrant healthcare workers like nurses?

    Hi Ed,

I’m really sorry – it sounds tough. What country do you live in?

Please tell us how your treatment is going. What meds are you taking. And what are your viral load and CD4 results? Discussing your HIV treatment (ART) with us can help, I hope.

I wish more countries like the UK are open minded and understanding to us HIV+ positive people.. Living with this disease is really hard especially coming from a conservative country in Southeast Asia..

    Hi Boyet,

You don’t have to tell your employer. But as Lisa says being positive and working in the UK is not an issue.

Do the employers have to know? I’m planning to find work and migrate to UK as well.
