Q and A

Question

Can I work in the UK?

I am being offered a job in UK but I am HIV positive from last 7+ years undergoing ART treatment since I was diagnosed positive, is it ok or not?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Yes its OK for you to live in the UK, you being positive won’t be an issue.

You will also be able to get free HIV treatment and monitoring.

Please bring a summary of your medical history with you so the new doctor has these notes.

Please also get in touch with i-Base again if you need information about how to register at a clinic. It is good to bring at least a month of meds with you though – more if possible. This is so there is not a pressure on getting the new clinic with often takes a few weeks.

Hi Kudi, i-Base is focussed on treatment questions rather that social benefits. If you are already in the UK, then please contact a local HIV organisation or a national project like THT.

In terms of healthcare, HIV testing, monitoring and treatment are available free on the NHS for anyone in the UK, so long as this is as an outpatient. Care if you stay overnight in a hosptital is only free if you are entitled to other free NHS care.

What are the benefits we can claim in UK as an HIV positive patient

Hi Musimenta, there are no restrictions in the UK for people living with HIV. Your status is not going to have an effect on getting a job. i-base is unable to help you get a job as we are not equipped for this role. Please see here for how to go about working in the UK: https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration/work-visas

    Hi Zen

Thanks, no one can test you for HIV in the UK without your permission. It is also not legal for an employer to ask you to take a test.

It should not be a problem for doctors, nurses and carers to be HIV positive. Please contact i-Base though if you have any problems.

Hi Roy, there are no restrictions in the UK for people living with HIV. Your status will not stop you getting a job.

Hi Marco, you are not required to disclose this. As being a carer is not a blood-facing role, there is no legal requirement to inform your employer of your status.

Hello. So if I am a senior carer (caregiver) and I will be deployed to UK for an employer sponsorship, do I need to disclose this my HIV status to my employer? Also, do I need to disclose this on my visa application too? Thanks
