Q and A

Question

My CD4 count is 114, is this OK?

I’ve just been told that my CD4 count is 114, does this mean I need to be on treatment?

Answer

Thanks for getting in a touch.

A CD4 count of 114 is classified as being low. When a CD4 count is low there is the increased risk of opportunistic infections. Please see here:

Therefore, it’s important that you start treatment for your HIV, so ARVs. Once on treatment, your CD4 count will slowly begin to rise. This means that your immune system will start to improve. For more info about starting treatment, please see here:

    Hi Vikram,

I’m sorry to hear your mother is in hospital. But what do the doctors say?

Is your mother getting HIV treatment (ART)? If so, ART can work very quickly. It can reduce the HIV viral load by 99% in the first weeks of treatment. And that can give the immune system the chance to recover.

Please see this page from ART in Pictures that shows how quickly ART starts to work.

Please let us know what HIV meds your mother is taking.

    Hi Mkama,

The CD4 count tells you how strong your immune system is. VL stands for viral load and that tells you how much HIV can be detected in the blood. These are the regular tests that show if your HIV treatment (ART) is working well.

    Please see questions 7 & 8 here.
