Q and A

Question

I’ve been losing weight, will I gain it back?

I’ve been losing weight for some time. I’ve just found out that I’m positive. Will I remain my lost weight once I start medication?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Weight loss is common in people who are positive, especially if they have a low CD4 count. Once someone starts treatment, their weight should gradually return to normal, so what it was like before there was a lot of weight loss. So yes, starting meds will help. Hi Candy,

If your CD4 is dropping and your viral load is high, this implies that your meds are’t working like they should be doing. You’re going to need to talk to your doctor and it’s very possible that you’ll need to change. Please see here: http://i-base.info/guides/side/changing-hiv-drugs
