Question

What is M171?

I’m 22 weeks pregnant. I’ve just been diagnosed. The pill that I’ve been given is M171, I wasn’t told what this is. I also don’t know what my CD4 count is. Is the M171 used to treat HIV?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

M171 is an ARV called Tribuss, it’s a generic version of Atripla, please see here: https://i-base.info/guides/1561

It’s safe to use when pregnant and is commonly used in countries in Sub Saharan Africa. It can be given to someone even if their CD4 count is not known.

Hi Steven, I can imagine while you feel bad but you shouldn’t feel that your partner should have told you. HIV stigma is still real and people are unsure of who they are comfortable telling, even those they are closest too. Please see this previous question: https://i-base.info/qa/20245

Hi Jezman, m171 is a medication called Trisbuss used for HIV management. It is not a test used for diagnosis. Have you had an HIV test?

What if you diagnosed by m171 all along you are not HIV positive. There after stop using that m171 ,what is risk of that ??

    Hi Neo,

The quick answer is not necessarily. Please see more info at this Q&A.

However, whether we are HIV postive or at risk of HIV we all need support. I hope your sister has support.
